It's necessary to reduce the amount of on-street parking in Manhattan. More blocks should be designated as no parking, at least on one side. Meters are necessary to have people pay for using the public space.
It is important for NYC to automate traffic enforcement via technology like cameras and reconfigure streets to enhance safety and compliance. This is the most efficent way.
Automobiles are by far the biggest danger on the roads and contribute to congestion. Drivers should always be the focus of enforcement.
Double parking is a major problem that could often be avoided, but I know someone who recently got a ticket when double parked, but was in the car and the cop just pulled behind the car, beeped for him to move, which he did, but then a ticket was mailed to them. I didn't know they could do that, but it could be a good way to stop double parking without causing further traffic disruption.
I live at the corner of Broadway and Broome. Broome St is a connector street from the Williamsburg Bridge to the Holland Tunnel. Every day at rush hour and many times over the weekend traffic is 100% gridlock. This means a traffic cop is needed (costly) and ambulances / fire trucks have a very hard time getting through. As Broome St locks up, Broadway does as well - causing mayhem for hours at a time. Plus as Soho is nearly 100% retail stores - there is huge foot traffic further competing for limited surface space.
I FULLY support the Move NY plan and this new bill and very much hope it gets enacted. The explicit benefits are clear - and there are actually many more tangential benefits as well (e.g. an ambulance getting to a hospital faster to save a life).
